The Chinese who have come to this country havenot proved desirable neighbors. Clannish in the extreme, they divide the community against itself. Unsanitary in their habits, ignorant of American law or its purpose, and looking upon this country as merely a place of temporary refuge in which to accumulate wealth to send to China, they detract from rather than add to the strength of the country as a whole. They lend themselves readily to the lowering of the wage scale, and the stimulus they give to local commerce is but a small ratio of the value of a normal American workingman to every industry with which he is brought in contact. “The Chinese Cannot Come,” Harpers Weekly (January 1902)
